Maria Bonzanigo (Lausanne, Switzerland), co-founder of Compagnia Finzi Pasca
Composer and choreographer
Starting from the age of 11, Maria Bonzanigo studies composition with Paul Glass and continues her education as a dancer, dance pedagogue, and choreographer from 1981 to 1995 with Rosalia Chladek, later teaching for the Internationale Gesellschaft Rosalia Chladek Dance System. In 1984 she meets Daniele Finzi Pasca, with whom she begins an intense and still ongoing artistic collaboration. With Daniele and his brother Marco, she co-founds the company Teatro Sunil with its peculiar vision of the art of clowning, dancing and acting: a theatrical technique they name the “Theatre of the Caress”. With Teatro Sunil she collaborates in around 30 creations performed in about 20 countries, playing the role of actress, dancer, composer of stage music, choreographer and director.
In 2011, together with Antonio Vergamini, Daniele Finzi Pasca, Hugo Gargiulo and Julie Hamelin Finzi, she co-founds Compagnia Finzi Pasca, a new structure uniting the destinies of Teatro Sunil and of Inlevitas. For Compagnia Finzi Pasca she acts both as a composer, writing the music to all of the company’s creations, and as a choreographer. This is the case also for big projects like Corteo, a 2005 Cirque du Soleil production (with over 8 million spectators in a 10-year tour, starting again in 2018) and Turin Olympic Games Closing Ceremony (2006 – while in the Sochi Paralympic Opening Ceremony (2014) some of Maria’s music was played). For Montréal Avudo, a production for Montreal’s 375th anniversary (2017), Maria’s music is recorded with the OM Orchestre Métropolitain of Montreal. Maria plays this double role also for the shows Donka. A letter to Chechov, created on the occasion of Anton Chekhov’s 150th birth anniversary, where Maria’s music compositions are recorded by the Sergei Rakhmaninov Symphony Orchestra in Moscow; for La Verità (2013) and Per te (2016). For the two latter, as in various other occasions, Maria’s music is recorded by the OSI Orchestra della Svizzera italiana in Lugano (Switzerland). Hers are the notes of Bianco su Bianco, and the soundtracks to Mohammed Soudani’s film Oro verde (2014) and to Valerio Jalongo’s documentary about CERN, Il senso della bellezza (2017). For her music composition for the show Nebbia (2007), Maria is awarded the Gascon-Roux Award by the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM) in Montréal. As a choreographer only, she takes care of two lyric operas: Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (Teatro San Carlo, Naples, Italy 2011) later introduced at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg (Russia) and Bizet’s Carmen (Teatro San Carlo (2015 and 2017).
Presently she is composing for the next Fête des Vignerons (Winegrowers’ Festival) 2019, a celebration held in Vevey (Switzerland) every 25 years approximately. Her work is published by Jecklin Editions, Teatro Sunil, Cirque du Soleil, Edizioni de Agostini and Compagnia Finzi Pasca. Maria’s music is being performed and listened to by millions of people worldwide.
